Lasik Eye Surgery in 6 Minutes

This is the Science Friday (National Public Radio) video about LASIK eye surgery. The funny thing about this video is that the narrator, who is probably also the producer, is a lot more nervous about LASIK laser vision correction than the patient himself. He is cool as a cucumber, I had LASIK myself, didn’t think it was a big deal and now I see fantastic. The video features Steven Vale, MD, medical director of Acuity Laser Eye & Vision Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Dr. Vale is one of the most well-respected and experienced Lasik surgeons in the world. Dr. Vale has performed over 21000 laser vision correction surgeries. Dr. Vale’s ability and experience really comes out in this otherwise realistic and detailed glimpse at the world of laser vision correction surgery.

I’m thinking of taking LASIK when I’m older. Maybe when I’m around my 30s. I’m only 14 right now so I don’t have to really worry about it. Hopefully LASIK will improve in the future and be more reliable.

My only question is that is there ANY pain? No pain at all? Just looking at this makes my eyes dry and makes me feel sick.

haha terrible graphics on the video, but otherwise very informative and helpful. My surgery’s a week away and my surgeon is similarly well qualified – can’t wait!!

To anyone considering it, go for your consultation. If they’re as reputable and honest as where I’m going then they’ll cover all the questions being asked in these comments that Proc is answering very well.

Wish me luck :)

By shanamonster on July 21st, 2010 at 7:03 pm

i wanted to make this surgery..but im scared now. does it hurt?

Excellent Video! I don’t believe any of that Mumbo Jumbo about how bad Lasik is. After all, they wouldn’t be in business anymore if it was that horrid. Very eye-opening!!! video. Get it? Eye-opening? XD. I will definitely get this when i’m done growing. My doctor said that at 18 I would be done growing and it would be okay. Opportunity of a lifetime! Amazing would technology can do these days!

i had this kind of operation. you keap your eye still by not moving it. the imediate effect is great . you see like with a new eye !!! it;s great ;) operation made in romania

im 25 and i had 2 surgeries when i was 18, i had my right eyes crossed in… after the 2nd surgery my eyes are still crossed but its looking outside and not inside.. i wonder how much is it to get it corrected and to have 20/20.. my left eye is good… the problem is my right eye… im locatred in philadelphia and i just talked to someone in the office to get an consultation

By mzeljk3489 on July 22nd, 2010 at 1:14 am

how do they manage not to blink? and does it hurt (at all)??????????

doesnt that hurt

Huh, I hoped by facing my fear of this I’d be a bit more interested in going through with it. I’m not. I’d have a terrible time to overcome the urge to move my eyes away from blades and crap like that. I’m still amazed my father did it.
