If your eyes are the window to your soul then doesn’t it make sense to maintain their appearance and keep them looking like the grand entrance way they should be. Eye surgery techniques have improved immensely during the last few years with more and more people taking the opportunity to improve both their vision and appearance.

Lasik eye surgery has been a godsend for people wanting improved vision. In Lasik eye surgery, the precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue; reshaping of the cornea and giving it renewed focusing power, has literally turned eye surgery “on it’s head.”

Where once glasses or contact lenses compensated for the eye’s imperfections, now people are turning to Lasik eye surgery. Patients with conditions such as myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia or combinations of the aforementioned, have become aware of the success rate of Lasik eye surgery and are going “under the laser.”

Laser Eye Surgery Procedures

Lasik is not the only laser eye surgery available to people. Non-laser refractive procedures are also available. This involves inserting artificial lenses into the eye; the resultant low heat radio waves reshape the eye.

The average cost of Lasik eye surgery has steadily risen in the last few years mainly due to the popularity of the procedure. The cost however, has not deterred people from going under the surgeon’s laser.

Cataract eye surgery is another procedure with an extremely high success rate; estimates have it at about 99%. Cataracts can only be removed through surgery. No medications or eye drops will make cataracts disappear.

Cosmetic Eye Surgery – Maintaining A Youthful Appearance

It’s not just vision improvement people are after. Let’s face it, age catches up with all of us but in the 21st. century, eye lift plastic surgery techniques have become so advanced that ending up on the surgeon’s table is no longer a tough decision for patients.

Baby boomers, responsible for a myriad of trends during the last 50 years, are wanting to stay looking young and cosmetic eye surgery, eye lift plastic surgery, eye lift surgery…call it what you like; these forms of appearance enhancing procedures are now an attractive option for people despite the costs and risks involved.

Laser Eye Surgery & Lasik Risks

As with any type of surgery there are risks involved and laser eye surgery is no different. However, the benefits far outweigh the risks which are minimal. By going through proper pre-screening and being truthful with your surgeon you can cut down risk significantly. Here’s a shortlist of the complications which can occur:

- A few patients experience halos, glare or double vision after surgery, which serious night vision problems.

- under treatment or over treatment

- severe dry eye syndrome

- another laser eye surgery risk is for results to decrease over time, especially in patients with farsighted vision.

After his lasik eye surgery, he claims to experience an improvement in viewing the holes on the green. A leading refractive industry newsletter reported that the average cost for LASIK eye surgery in the second quarter of 2005 was 1,965 USD.

There are thousands all across the USA, who are taking to Laser Eye Surgery, the most exciting advancement in ophthalmology.

Those undergoing Lasik eye surgery in New York often have little problem finding reputable and experienced surgical centers.

Instead he searched for a job for the maintenance of his family and also important treatments of his parents like eye surgery, especially if the procedure to be done is in the face, like a rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eye surgery) or rhytidectomy (face lift), you could end up having to stare at your ‘cheap’ doctor’s mistakes in the mirror every day.

If in the third quarter you decide that you want to get laser eye surgery or take a vacation write down where and how much, but what most people have come to discover is that corrective laser eye surgery – a procedure that takes less than an hour and costs considerably less than a lifetime of vision correction prescriptions – can not only perfect your vision but address a number of eye conditions with which many people suffer.

The important thing to remember if you consider yourself a candidate; get as much information as you can from Lasik eye surgery reviews and do a little shopping around when searching for surgeons.

People who wear glasses or lens may consult them to verify whether they require a laser eye surgery. But be warned, having eye surgery today based simply on one center advertising the procedure at hundreds of dollars less than another is in no way, any reason to rush in and jump under a laser. Laser eye surgery also works for age-related vision problems.

In LASIK eye surgery, the skills of the physician or surgeon are more important than in the PRK procedure, where the computer does most of the work.

While lasik eye surgery is reasonably safe, any complications which do arise will need to be treated and therefore can ‘blow out’ the original quote. Take the recent LASIK eye surgery offer I’ve received in the mail last month.

The FDA had not yet approved laser eye surgery and so it was only available in Canada. It’s time to ditch this hassle and look into lasik eye surgery. Won’t I go blind from such an eye surgery?

Eye surgery technology on the improve there may come a time when laser eye surgery risk is non existent given the rapid rate in which technology is advancing.

Eye surgery kept Ruas off the card, and the replacement was reportedly injured in training just a few days before the fight. Just be sure to ask about every little detail associated with it during your initial consultation as this all adds to the final laser eye surgery price bill.

If you meet the requirements, it also offers an increased probability that the resultant wave front lasik eye surgery will provide a successful outcome with fewer side effects.

Many people are taking advantage of this to travel to India save on eye surgery, get a free holiday and have money left over. On their web site, they advise people never to look for bargains when they are shopping for parachutes, scuba gear or laser eye surgery.

Lasik eye surgery cost has come down considerably in recent years.

All this is essential for the surgeon to be able to carry out the laser eye surgery successfully. Some people might be old-fashioned and don’t want to try corrective eye surgery.

If you meet the requirements, it also offers an increased probability that the resultant wave front lasik eye surgery will provide a successful outcome with fewer side effects.

As tempting as it may be to go with the lowest eye surgery quote or the first one that you get, you need to shop around and be confident that you have made the right decision, a decision you will have to live with for many years to come.

I don’t know that I’d trust a barber to use one of those but if you were a licensed eye doctor looking for a competitive edge you could offer corrective eye surgery and a haircut for one, all inclusive price.

And for those who have long managed the expense and inconvenience of eyeglasses and contact lenses, the idea of corrective eye surgery seems most appealing.

As technology is evolving rapidly, the future LASIK eye surgery is expected to treat severe refractive errors. The patient is required to take certain precautions for a period of 7-10 days before the Lasik eye surgery.

Remember, not everyone will be suitable for lasik eye surgery. Post laser eye surgery the patient will have to adjust their lifestyle to accommodate the healing cornea.

Therefore, if the doctor acts hurried or seems distracted during your initial meeting, you may take this as an indication of the attitude you will find during and after the laser eye surgery itself.

Here are some of the associated risks which could occur: – vision loss – visual symptoms – regular follow ups as a result of under or over treatment – dry eyes – diminishing results side effects of laser eye surgery let’s examine the risks in a little more detail.

A quality eye surgeon is vital in achieving excellent results from any laser eye surgery. Not surprisingly, as technology continues to advance, corrective laser eye surgery continues to make similar advancements.

Eye surgery technology is improving that there may come a time when laser eye surgery risk is non existent given the rapid rate in which technology is advancing.

90% of these aberrations create common refractive errors such as farsightedness, astigmatism and nearsightedness which are usually treated by optical devices like contact lenses, laser eye surgery, using PRK, LASIK (or LASEK) or basic eyeglasses.

For most people thinking of undergoing it, the first question is of course how laser eye surgery works. This procedure is called Lasik eye surgery and it corrects vision problems for patients.

Laser eye surgery price is important; make no mistake as many people in society simply cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars at the drop of a hat.

Most patients report virtually no pain during Lasik eye surgery and only mild and infrequent discomfort. The most common form of laser eye surgery is LASIK or laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis. The only situation where flying may be dangerous after eye surgery is when a bubble of gas has been placed within the eye.

Keep in mind the importance of having realistic expectations about laser eye surgery. So what does lasek laser eye surgery entail? Lasik or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis eye surgery is the surgical procedure used to correct these refractive errors of the eyes.

While Lasik has been the new kid on the block in relation to eye surgery techniques, PRK(Photorefractive keratectomy) is still an option many surgeons prefer to use in some instances.

PRK eye surgery involves re-shaping the corneal tissue however, unlike it’s Lasik cousin, there is no corneal flap created before the laser is applied. PRK is used to correct problems such as mild myopia and astigmatism.

It’s one of the earlier eye surgery procedures developed and is still very much in use today for the reason mentioned.

Pre-Screening Phase

This can be quite extensive and will involve an exhaustive analysis of the patient. If it doesn’t in your case, then you should ask a question or two along the lines of why not?

Before PRK eye surgery is given the green light, a doctor will examine the eye thoroughly and your history with relation to your eyes. An eye exam will comprise a number of assessments including the refractive error measurement, tear function and dilation assessment.

The surgery itself doesn’t take long and will generally only last about 10-15 minutes however, with the preparation involved, you could find yourself in the theater room for up to an hour.

PRK Risks

As with any surgery there are always risks. Here are some risks involved with PRK eye surgery:

- Possible reaction to anesthesia
- Risk of infection
- Under or over correction
- Development of glared vision and halos
- Sensitivity to light
- Corneal haze
- Having worse vision than pre-surgery
- Eye wear may still be needed particularly in older patients

When talking about risks during PRK eye surgery it must be remembered that while they exist, the risk factor is still relatively small. The risk is cut down even further through rigorous testing.

Anyone who fails to meet the strict requirements to qualify for the surgery need to understand that their well being needs to be the first consideration.

Recovery time can be affected considerably with some of the risks mentioned should they occur. Recovery is usually longer than Lasik and can be anywhere from 7-14 days.

The selection of the surgeon when considering Lasik laser eye surgery is extremely important. In fact, many suggest the surgeon’s skill in performing this delicate procedure just about counts for everything.

Selecting a well qualified surgeon will involve a little homework however, endorsements from those who have had the procedure performed successfully in the past is a good way to refine your list.

Another selection method is to talk to your doctor and ask for a recommendation. One of the first things you need to check are the surgeon’s credentials and in particular, how many procedures he/she has performed previously. In other words, experience is a vita; element in choosing a surgeon.

Lasik Laser Eye Surgery

For those with severe vison problems, Lasik laser eye surgery should be a consideration. It also allows a faster recovery than PRK(photorefractive keratectomy) and other methods. In addition, patients who have undergone a LASIK laser eye surgery can see accurately enough to drive and read within just a week.

The Risks

Risks are involved in any type of surgery and Lasik is no different. The risk factor with Lasik however is extremely small especially when the skill and experience of the surgeon is taken into account. However small though, it still exists.

For example, there are side effects to be aware of with LASIK laser eye surgery and this could affect a small number of people. Such effects include over or under-correction, scarring of the cornea, astigmatism, corneal infections, lower contrast sensitivity or problems with driving at night.

PRK And RK

PRK and RK(radial keratotomy) are always an option when going through the pre-screening process. Physicians will evaluate a patient whose intention is to undergo Lasik laser eye surgery and in some cases, could be advised to undergo a PRK or RK procedure instead. After studying all the options they have and consider side effects, many of them eventually agree on other methods.

Many clinical centers, while they do perform LASIK laser eye surgery in many situations, they claim that other methods are in some cases more suitable. For example, some physicians believe that for a small number of patients with low or moderately near-sighted eye conditions, a RK (radial keratotomy) is more appropriate.

The bottom line however, is Lasik laser eye surgery is usually the best option and the other two methods would be considered given the requirements of the patient. This is why choosing an experienced surgeon is in your favor and why the pre-screening process is such a vital aspect of laser eye surgery.

Is laser eye surgery safe? If you look at the statistics then yes, it's very safe however, because it is a surgical procedure, there are still risks to take into consideration.

It's important to maintain realistic expectations when considering eye surgery. A friend or a relative may have had the procedure performed and are excited about the results. It's easy to get caught up in that excitement and rush in and explore your options. However, there is a lot of preliminary work to be done before you actually make it to the surgeon's chair.

Not Everyone Will Qualify For Laser Eye Surgery

Part of the process of making laser eye surgery safe is the preliminary studies. Not everyone will qualify. In fact, if you are pregnant or are pre-disposed to a dry eye condition then you could fall into the risk factor. This is why it's so important to talk to your doctor and become aware of exactly what your risk factors are.

You will be put through a rigorous screening process to determine if you are the right candidate and if not, then you will be told why you perhaps should consider not having the procedure performed.

Is Laser Eye Surgery Safe - Some Of The Risk Factors

Without trying to put you off laser eye surgery some of the risk factors include possible vision loss. Although this is rare, the risk still exists. For example, procedures which use a microkeratome blade to cut a flap involve the risk of cutting it off instead of leaving it hinged. If the flap is damaged, the patient may suffer vision loss. Even surgery which is successful has the ability to leave small imperfections that can result in blurred vision.

Newer technology which doesn't involve cutting a flap from the corneal tissue, such as IntraLanse makes laser eye surgery safe. These procedures are more accurate, but also more expensive. There are some techniques to correct imperfections left by a blade too.

Other risk factors include post operative infections; this is higher for PRK and Lasek procedures as opposed to Lasik, the risk of scar tissue being left by surgery and under or over corrected vision. Halo effects, corneal haze and decreased night vision are other problems which could be considered risk factors.

Is laser eye surgery safe? Well, it has an outstanding track record but while the majority of those patients who have benefited from this procedure report excellent results, there are some who have experienced side effects; some disappearing over time while others are a little more serious. Keep your expectations realistic and get the "good oil" from your doctor.

Laser eye surgery cost has steadily increased in recent years. This is only natural given the amazing advancement in surgery technology. There is a variation in cost from center to center and some homework for you to perform before you decide on your surgery.

You need to be wary of bargain basement surgery prices being advertised as there are hidden factors usually associated with them. Prices quoted for less than $1000 per eye should be treated on face value as in many instances, factors such as eligibility to have the surgery performed at these low prices will depend largely on stringent qualifying rules. In fact, reality is that only a very small percentage of laser eye surgery cost will be offered or performed at under four figures.

The Rise In Lasik Laser Eye Surgery Cost

LASIK laser eye surgery cost has been on a constant increase. Just to get an idea, here is what a refractive industry reported on the average price of this type of procedure:

In 2002, the average LASIK laser eye surgery cost ranged between $1,550 and $1,600.
By October 2003, it had already increased to approximately $1,710.
At the end of 2004, LASIK laser eye surgery cost raised above $1,800.
In the first half of 2005, the average price was $1,965.

These figures include several types of businesses, from individual surgeons use rented equipment to those who own it and from regional clinical centers to nationwide eye surgery provider networks.

TLC Laser Eye Centers, a leading LASIK provider, had an average price of $1,800 in 2002. At the end of 2004, the average LASIK laser eye surgery cost rose to $1,957 and at the beginning of 2005 the price was $1,983.

LasikPlus, another famous nationwide provider, reported an average price of $1,344 per eye in 2005, which is slightly lower than $1,351 at the end of 2004, but much higher than $1,173 at the beginning of 2003.

More Eye Surgery Cost Estimates

Other types of eye surgery have different prices, also varying upon many factors, such as individual prescription, the surgeon you choose and the place where you live. Here are the average prices per eye for other common eye surgery procedures:

Corneal inserts: $2,800 to $3,800
CK: $1,200 to $2,500
PRK: $1,000 to $1,800
LASEK: approximately the same prices as for LASIK

Technology Is Pushing Up The Price?

Laser eye surgery procedures that use new technologies are also more expensive. In LASIK with IntraLase, the surgeon cuts a flap form the cornea with a laser, not a microkeratome. The price is generally higher than for regular LASIK procedure, increasing with $250 – $500 per eye. The increase is partly explained by the fact that the surgeon has to cover the cost for the system. Patients paying for this procedure are said to have less flap complications, require less treatments after surgery and have as better chance to achieve a 20/20 or even higher acuity.

Financing is available to help you reduce laser eye surgery cost. There are many financing companies specialized in elective procedures which offer plans with long-term payments and fixed rates. Many laser eye surgery centers and private surgeons work with one of such companies to be able to offer more affordable financing plans to their patients.

In the end, the decision to have laser eye surgery should only be made after a rigorous qualifying process. First of all, you need to weigh up the risks associated with such a procedure. The good news is, if you are not suitable for laser eye surgery, then this will be bourne out during the interview stage. If you do qualify, then laser eye surgery cost will be a major factor in determining whether you actually go ahead with the procedure.

Laser eye surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years and given it’s apparent procedure speed and rate of success, more and more people who once “sat on the laser eye surgery” fence, now are considering strongly their options.

The good news is that laser eye surgery techniques continue to evolve and with the help of technology, it is starting to become a, well, fashionable procedure. But don’t think it’s the answer to all your eye sight problems. Laser eye surgery is still surgery nevertheless, and you’ll need to go through a solid consultation period with your surgeon before deciding on exactly which procedure will suit you. There are always risks associated with any kind of surgery and laser eye surgery is no different.

Understanding Laser Eye Surgery

There are three problem areas that laser eye surgery would be considered. People with near sighted vision, far sighted vision and distorting vision. Medically termed as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. During laser eye surgery, a surgeon will re-shape the cornea with a device called an Excimer Laser. The cornea provides up to 70 per cent of a person’s ability to focus.

Laser Eye Surgery Procedures

The best known laser procedures are PRK (Photo-Refractive Keractomy), available since early nineties and LASIK (Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis), which first surfaced during the 1990′s.

PRK – A surgeon uses a beam of light during this procedure that vaporizes small amounts of eye tissue on the surface of the eye. Enough tissue is removed to reshape the cornea and correct vision. The patients recovery time is between 1-2 weeks.

LASIK – A little more complicated than PRK. The first step is to cut and lift a flap of the cornea. This is followed by the surgeon removing precise amounts of the inside layers of the cornea using a computer guided laser. Finally, the flap is put back in its place and the eye heals fast by itself.

Did You Know?

While Lasik eye surgery has been a marvellous innovation the costs associated with it usually prevent many people from taking up the option to have it performed. Costs today average up towards $2500 per eye. You need to ask yourself whether the benefits of this treatment outweight the financial cost factor.

Benefits and Risks

Laser eye surgery is always performed by highly skilled and well prepared surgeons. Many patients report their lives are significantly improved and they no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

One thing to remember though, it’s important to keep realistic expectations about laser eye surgery. Patients 40 years and over may still need to wear reading glasses even after the surgery. Also consider that the eye continues to change after the surgery and you may still need to wear prescription glasses or lenses at some point later in life. Secondary laser surgery could still be required if the first is not completely successful.

Following PRK laser eye surgery, the patient may still experience bouts of blurry vision during the healing process. This should only be temporary. You also need to take into account possible regression meaning the eye will go back to its original state within approximately six months. When this occurs, you either need more surgery or have to go back to wearing glasses or contact lenses.

There are less negative impacts with Lasik surgery. The eye will heal faster however, as it involves cutting part of the eye tissue, complication issues are greater.

There is a lot more information on laser eye surgery today than there was 20 years ago. Back then, it was probably still being thought of as some futuristic medical procedure saved for television shows such as Star Trek. So exactly what is laser eye surgery? In a nutshell, laser eye surgery is used to reshape the cornea. People with conditions such as myopia and hypermetropia, short and long sightedness, have benefited from laser eye surgery just when they were probably thinking their condition was something they would have to live with.

The restoration of normal vision is the aim of laser eye surgery and the results thus far have been nothing short of amazing. In a lot of cases, contacts and glasses have become a thing of the past for many patients.Information on laser eye surgery is readily available, either through your physician or by doing a search on the internet.

In one type of laser eye surgery, the outer layer of the cornea, also called epithelium, is removed and an excimer laser is used to reshape underneath tissue. This procedure is called photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

In a newer procedure, a microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the corneal tissue, which is then lifted and an excimer laser is used to reshape underlying tissue. In the end, the flap is put back to its place. This type of laser eye surgery is called laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Nowadays, it is more commonly used than PRK.

Did You Know?

There are many variations of lasik eye surgery. PRK was once the most common refractive eye surgery procedure performed. However, with the introduction of lasik it has taken “more of a back seat” but still has a prominent role in the world of laser eye surgery. Depending on the requirements of patients, PRK can benefit both near and far sighted people but always ask your doctor why he is recommeding this type of procedure. Be clear about what you are going to undertake.

More Information On Laser Eye Surgery

The excimer laser is a special type of laser that does not burn the corneal tissue, but vaporizes a small quantity of the cornea each time a beam is pulsed onto the eye surface. The number of pulses and diameter of the beam are carefully controlled by a computer to enhance accuracy.

Local anesthetic eye drops are used before the surgery. The procedure takes a few minutes per eye. The actual time when the laser is used for reshaping the corneal tissue is generally less than a minute.

Various eye conditions require different types of treatment:

Myopia – the central peak of the cornea has to be flattened in order to reduce short-sightedness and improve vision.
Hypermetropia – the central peak of the cornea has to be made steeper in order to improve vision. The laser is applied to the edges of the cornea.
Astigmatism – this is a condition where the cornea is not evenly curved. The laser is applied more linear to improve vision.

More Information on Laser Eye Surgery – The Post Surgery

After laser eye surgery, you should expect some minor discomfort. However, you should be able to see, although not very clearly. You won’t be able to drive on your own, so you need to have someone drive you home or take a cab.

More Information on Laser Eye Surgery – What Are The Possible Side Effects

Just like any operation, laser eye surgery involves a few risks as well. You should have some information on laser eye surgery and its possible complications and side effects before deciding you want to have this type of surgery.

Treatment not successful – this may be the result of either under treatment and over treatment. You may need another surgery to enhance vision.

Dry eyes – you might have to use eye drops.

Delayed healing – the flap or the outer layer of the cornea might not heal properly and require follow-up treatment.

Infection – in case of an infection, you may need to follow an antibiotic treatment.

Superficial scarring – a second procedure might be needed to repair scarred tissue.

Excessive thinning of the cornea – vision problems may return and you might need to use contacts or have another surgery.

Sensitive eyes – some patients experience excessive sensitivity to glare, which makes driving more difficult.

Blurred vision – ‘halos’ might result from the surgical procedure, but usually they fade out over time.

There is certainly a lot of information on laser eye surgery to wade through. It can be a little confusing initially for anyone first exploring the world of laser eye surgery. Make sure you understand exactly what is involved. As with any surgery, there are always risks involved but before you get put off by these, examine very closely the benefits. The reason given by many patients for eventually do go ahead with laser eye surgery is that the benefits far outweigh the risks.
